Most of those who move are so happy to finally arrive in their new home that they can overlook broken dishes or a scratch on the dining room table. But there is no reason for your household items to become victims of the move. With a little care and planning, your household items will arrive in perfect condition.

Here are some packing tips to keep in mind when packing large items, small items, and awkward items.

Large Item Packing:

  • Tie the bed frames together with tape or string and then label the pieces so they are easy to reassemble.
  • Fill drawers with tightly wrapped, fragile clothing or items. Cover them with a blanket or furniture pads and rope securely.
  • Remove the legs from the table, pad and tie. Put the nuts and bolts in a bag and tape them under the table.
  • Empty, defrost and empty the refrigerator, freezer and dishwasher. Clean interiors and store accessories in bags. Place towels between the sides of the washer to prevent them from spinning and tape moving parts. Cover with blankets and tie.
  • Use the original packaging for computers, televisions, and electronic devices, or purchase boxes for specific electronic devices.

Small Items Packaging:

  • Put your microwave, VCR and other small appliances in boxes and place them with crumpled paper.
  • Pack the books in small boxes, alternating bindings. Try to keep each box under 30 pounds.
  • Pack hanging items, such as clothing and curtains, in closet boxes. Leave small items in drawers.
  • Wrap fragile collectibles in bubble wrap and tape them down.
  • Pack CDs upright and cushion them with newspapers.
  • Stack pots and pans and cushion with paper.
  • Put the kitchen items you’ll need right away in a separate box and label them appropriately so you know which one to unpack first.
  • Wrap dishes individually in bubble wrap and never stack them horizontally. Pack plates in saucers around the edges and place cups and bowls around them.

Uncomfortable Items Packaging:

  • Wrap the arms and legs of the chair in bubble wrap. Put chair covers or buy chair bags to protect yourself.
  • Loosen the bicycle handlebars and turn them sideways. Cover chains and pedals to keep grease off other items.
  • Wrap small items, such as mirrors and artwork, in newspaper and pack them in mirror boxes. Cover larger pieces with cardboard, tape them down, and place along the sides of the truck or inside the closet boxes.
  • Take apart heavy garden furniture. Put the nuts and bolts in a bag and tie them together.
  • Roll up rugs and secure with string or tape.
  • Place the plants in plastic bags with air holes and then in boxes. Water them before you go.
  • Wrap the sharp edges of the tools and use enough cushioning to avoid injury. Tape the long-handled tools together and place the smaller ones in boxes.
  • Drain gasoline from all tanks on lawnmowers and edgers and check for oil leaks.
  • Use medium-sized boxes for garage and attic items, such as spray paints, brushes, and car waxes. Discard oily rags or anything combustible.
  • Keep pets in a front pet carrier with you. Ask your vet for suggestions on how to make his movement less traumatic.
